Informations

Geologic hydrogen is now considered an important potential pathway to low-carbon energy. Although the field of geologic hydrogen exploration is in its formative stages, the USGS estimates suggest that natural hydrogen reserves may be >1 trillion tonnes globally with up to ~23 Mt/year of new geologic hydrogen. For perspective, this is ~30% of today’s global annual hydrogen demand. Despite these large estimates, to date natural hydrogen is only produced in the Bourakébougou field in Mali or co-produced by other means of extraction (e.g., geothermal energy). By leveraging over 100 years of the oil and gas industry’s exploration and technological development and integrating over four decades of our own expertise evaluating gases and fluids from natural hydrogen systems, Koloma is positioning itself to be the leader in data- and technology-advantaged hydrogen exploration. During the HNAT presentation, Koloma will review its current understanding of hydrogen formation mechanisms (e.g., serpentinization, radiolysis) and geologic hydrogen systems.
